Chernihiv Municipality, Ukraine

Description

Chernihiv is a city in northern Ukraine with a population of 282,000. With over 1,300years of history, it has been a significant cultural and political center. During Russia’s invasion, Chernihiv endured heavy shelling and was blockaded for over a month, but it showed resilience in defense and recovery, earning the “Hero City” title from President Zelensky.
The city has been rebuilding since 2022, with many projects carried out in partnership with international organisations such as UNDP, UNICEF, and USAID. Chernihiv has 13 sister cities and recently expanded its international partnerships with cities in Germany, France, Poland, Finland, and the USA. In 2024, it became a member of the Eurocities network.
Chernihiv seeks membership in ALDA to strengthen local governance, exchange best practices, above all in what is related to youth empowerment and education.
