As the ongoing war against Ukraine continues to be endangered, dreams continue to be broken and days are flowing by, ALDA believes that it is its responsibility to bring the attention to those that are now fighting  to ensure their safeguard of rights and freedoms.

In its commitment  to reinforce the  Local Democracy Agencies, the Association invites the community of Local Authorities and Civil Society Organisations to the  conference entitled “Supporting the Local Democracy Agencies in Ukraine”.  Aimed at giving a reliable update on the situation on the ground in Ukraine, as well as on the activities that ALDA has implemented in order to provide support to civilians and people in need, the conference will also be the occasion to focus on the on-going activities, as well as possible future ones,  that need further support.

The conference will take place on the 22nd June 2022 at 2.30 PM in Brussels at Residence Palace

In the Paris Declaration of 2015, European Ministers of Education have re-announced their commitment for an inclusive education as an important door opener of social inclusion, therefore migrants and refugees shall be helped to ensure their full participation in society, good education and transition to the labour market.

To increase the chances of migrants and refugees to remain within the educational and vocational system of their host country, the 3 STEPS project is aiming to provide them basic skills as well as a stable grounding for further personal achievements.

The practices promoted through the project (Basic education and Tandem Now) aim to standardise a valid and adaptable teaching method in the various countries involved.

3 STEPS Network

The goal is to provide channels through which the necessity of social inclusion of migrants and refugees in terms of education and vocational training increases its visibility and strength in the five countries of implementation (Spain, Turkey, Italy, Greece and France) across different entities, among those Universities, private organisations, social businesses on education, schools that are pursuing an agenda of inclusion and are committed to promote successful methodologies for inclusion.

The expected result is to obtain a well-established network of schools, public authorities, NGOs and volunteer organisations, important influencers and decision makers as well as transnational institutions able to call for policy reform.

Partners believe that joining the 3 STEPS network means having a communicative, trustworthy and empowered relationship with all the people interested in the project, and which we want to maintain until the end of its existence.

Join 3 STEPS Network here!

How to join?

If you are a stakeholder in the field of migration, working at local, national or European level in one of the 5 implementing countries (Spain, Turkey, Italy, Greece and France) to foster inclusion of young disadvantaged refugees and migrants, join the network!

Sending inspiring and universal messages to the community, once again, about 40 youth with disabilities took the stage on May 31th, 2022, in Kairouan, Tunisia and presenting a great variety of performances. The event was organized by the LDA Tunisia within the project “Starting with You” for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities and their inclusion in the society.

Among the 40 participants, 30 performers were Tunisians from Kairouan city, while 10 were Italians students, part of the  association « Mettiamoci In Gioco », who traveled from Italy to Kairouan specifically to join the show and perform in the event!

The show was designed as follow: 7 different performances from mime and sign language to a fairytale play, and from singing and dancing to corporal expression. The themes varied, yet interrelated through both the Tunisian and the Italian anthems, emphasising the idea of participation, friendship, empathy, inclusion, and the sense of belonging and community. Also, the music was also varied and marvelous that added a wonderful energy and enthusiasm to the scenes.

Aged between 7 and 35 years old, the performers are currently engaged in three local centers, each of which focuses on different characteristics: physical, mental, and auditive. All together, based on the potential and abilities of each participant, one of the dance performance proved how inclusion is possible, while breaking social exclusion.

This initiative marked a further step in building a bridge for communication, while highlighting the productive, creative, autonomous and confident skills of the performers

Once again, this initiative marked a further step in building a bridge for communication, while highlighting the productive, creative, autonomous and confident skills of the performers.

Hence, the event brought to the fore the need to further reinforce the rights of people with disabilities; especially in a city like Kairouan, which poses several barriers to citizens, being not fully accessible. In light of this, theatre thus became a source of advocacy, while raising a voice and breaking stereotypes.  In the show the people portrayed a novel image where they were delighted, energetic, vivid, and active. They brought movement, energy, art, and wit to the scene. Coming from different backgrounds; local authorities, directors and staff of centers for rehabilitation, ONGs, Tunisian and Italian parents, media, students, youth and artists; the audience, engaged during the whole event, got the vibe and was deeply moved

From a general stand point, the event also emphasized the role of theater as a tool for improvement, capacity building, and personal growth, resulting from a seven-months of theater workshops, where youth actively participated working on their artistic capacities, discovering their abilities and empowering their skills.

Concluding, this event highlights the LDA Tunisia role and contribution to creating an inclusive community and reinforcing citizenship and participation of people especially those who belong to vulnerable groups. It also foregrounds the agency’s commitment to sensitize the stakeholders and the community  about the rights of people with disabilities and contribute to creating a solid ground for communication and participation through artistic expression.

The event was unique and unprecedented in the community which made it standout. The LDA Tunisia team ensured that the event received the deserved public attention and national and local media coverage.
The cultural and artistic event “Theatre for everyone” is the second round and the LDA Tunisia is looking forward to organizing more shows in the future. The agency is the regional responsible for the project in Kairouan, thus it actively seeks an effective, innovative and participatory solutions platform.

On 21-22 June 2022, Brussels hosted the European Development Days 2022 (EDD), Europe’s most important forum on international partnership organised by the European Commission.

Entitled “Global Gateway: building sustainable partnerships for a connected world” this year’s edition was dedicated not only to the European Strategy as such, but also on how to improve and foster it in terms of digital, energy and transport. The latter, especially, was the realm within which ALDA+ will provide its contribution!

Hence, ALDA+ joined this international event by actively participating with a stand addressing “Urban development, smart & interconnected cities. Together for fostering Good Governance at Local and Global Level”.

Concretely, based on the positive example of AUTREMENT project, currently implemented in the Tunisian cities of Kairouan and Mahdia by the ALDA office in Strasbourg, the stand showcased project’s good practices on sustainable urban mobility, which can be taken as an example for other cities.

ALDA+ joined the European Development Days 2022 by participating with a stand addressing “Urban development, smart & interconnected cities

Despite its paperless format, our stand  engaged participants through digital tools and tricks: not only informative slides presenting ALDA and its spin off ALDA+, but also an interactive quiz on soft mobility and sustainability! Thus, a participation under the banner of sustainability and… discovery!

Last but not least, theEuropean Development Days aim to bring the “development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges”.

For this reason we are extremely glad and proud to take active part in such a dynamic and crucial event. More, the EDD2022 were the perfect spot to showcase, once more, ALDA’s flagship initiative the “European Support to Local Democracy”,  since it provides a complete overview on ALDA’s expertises in all target regions and underlines the fundamental role of cooperation.

Within the GEM IN project, a stakeholder advisory committee was established in France by ALDA in 2022 to provide advice during the piloting and further adaptation of the GEM IN educational programme in formal and non-formal educational environments. The Committee France included 3 members (1 educational stakeholder, 1 non-formal education stakeholder and 1 stakeholder in the field of policy-making) and had for objective to provide inputs and feedbacks on whether the project is reaching its objectives and results and contribute to the development of future exploitation opportunities of the GEM IN educational programme through their direct experience and knowledge.

The first meeting on 8th of February was held online and counted with the participation of representatives from several French actors in the field of cultural and non-formal education. This meeting allowed members to get acquainted with the project and the tools developed, especially the educational framework and the game to be used as an educational resource by all interested parties. An explanation of all the steps that were taken to create the game and its contents, keeping in mind the values and the methodology, was presented in addition to the rules of the game.

Stakeholder advisory committee: established  to provide advice during the piloting and further adaptation of the GEM IN educational programme

During the second meeting on 25th of April 2022, members discussed the results of the piloting phase organised in the five other countries of the project. Following this presentation and the general conclusions from the piloting, a reflection on the method “learning by playing” including example used by ALDA and the members of the Committee was conducted. This resulted in a discussion on the recommendations that were drafted in the operational pack and comments from the members of the Committee, receiving positive feedback, indicating that there was a clear understanding of the current situation of intercultural education and the lack of resources for teachers and educators.

The meeting was concluded by inviting members to attend and participate actively in the Final Conference in Strasbourg on the 5th of May 2022.

The municipalities of Thiene in Italy and Ijevan in Armenia will together with ALDA implement the project “Citizen Participation and town development: the role of local authorities”. The project is focused on developing the cooperation between Thiene and Ijevan and includes study visits and trainings in both Municipalities.

The project is funded by the Veneto Region under the programme “Iniziativa Diretta 2011- Cooperazione decentrata allo sviluppo” for regional interventions for the promotion of human rights, the culture of peace, development cooperation and solidarity.

OBJECTIVES

The project aims to build inter-municipality relations between the Municipality of Thiene in the Veneto region in Italy and the Municipality of Ijevan in the Tavush region in Armenia.
Furthermore it aims to develop decentralized cooperation between the two towns as a first step and then to increase and strengthen the role of local authorities in the politics and practise of participation in Armenia. A final objective is to support participative urban development.
Although local self-government and citizen participation in Armenia is guaranteed by law there is a lack of mechanisms to implement these provisions and use the principles for citizen participation in practice. This project seeks to provide exchange of good practice to develop these issues in the future.

ACTIVITIES

The three activities that compose the core of the project aim to increase citizens’ participation in Ijevan and give possibilities to study the dialog between local authorities and civil society and the instruments used to facilitate citizen participation.

  • The first activity will be a training session in Ijevan in October or November 2011 by two representatives of Thiene with the local staff in Ijevan for information about participation and the developing methods used by Thiene and to identify topics for the later study visit to Thiene.
  • The second action is a workshop with an expert from ALDA for 30 persons of local authorities and civil society organisations about topics of Active Citizenship, participation and cooperation between local authorities and civil society for urban development.
  • The last action is a study trip to Thiene in Italy in March 2012 where representatives from Ijevan will see concrete examples of the trained methods such as the Urban Centre of Thiene. This study visit will thus help create contacts and a network for the sustainability of the whole project.

The project is funded by the Veneto Region under the programme “Iniziativa Diretta 2011- Cooperazione decentrata allo sviluppo” for regional interventions for the promotion of human rights, the culture of peace, development cooperation and solidarity

This project aimed at providing an unbiased platform for debate and exchange of experiences and/or best practices on youth employment, young entrepreneurship and creativity by bringing together youth workers, youth leaders and young people. Its main objective was to search for a new way of thinking about work and entrepreneurship, more suitable to present time and to the current economic situation.
The activities carried out within NEW were a seminar in Arzignano, Italy; five National Youth Initiatives, one for each partners’ country, namely Italy, Greece, Malta, France and Czech Republic, and a Trans-National Youth exchange in Pelhrimov, Czech Republic.
All the activities involved about 1350 young people in the 5 countries, but also stakeholders, institutions, local enterprises that actively participated to develop the activities of the project.

OBJECTIVES

NEW envisages to achieve the following objectives:

  • Create an unbiased platform for debate and exchange of experiences;
  • provide best practices on youth employment, young entrepreneurship and creativity by bringing together youth workers, youth leaders and young people;
  • search for a new way of thinking about work and entrepreneurship, more suitable to present time and to the current economic situation, and trust worthier from young people.

ACTIVITIES

  • Seminar in Arzignano

A seminar took place in Arzignano, Italy, from 11 to 16 June 2012, which involved 35 youth leaders and youth workers from the different partner countries. The event provided a platform for reflection, discussion and exchange of good practices, around the topic of entrepreneurship. The Seminar was based on working groups and other non-formal learning activities.
During the seminar, the leader of the different national groups were directly involved in the activities flow: there were short evaluation and check meetings every day to discuss about the proposed activities and they become really an important support to develop and lead them. Every day all national groups were involved to develop simple activities like energizers, but they had also the opportunity to organize national evenings and national workshops about youth entrepreneurship.
Thereafter, each partner organization organized in its territory a youth initiative (between September 2012 and September 2013) to experiment and put in practice the ideas developed during the seminar, to give everyone an opportunity to be directly and actively involved in doing something concrete around the topic.

Round-table agenda

National youth initiatives took also place in the partners countries:

  • The Youth Initiative in Italy: “CreaCult”

A group of five Italian participants to the first phase of the project, the seminar in Arzignano, decided to raise the opportunity offered by the project to realize a local youth initiative about creativity and entrepreneurship. They were supported by the local Municipality (especially the Youth Policies Councillor), a mentor of the “Studio Progetto Social Cooperative” and the Youth Information Office. They helped the group of young people to find out their own personal resources and capacities, discuss about their thoughts and wills, inform themselves about the local context on the selected theme, focus the ideas to develop firstly their main goal and then the activity to be realized, the development phases and the division of tasks among them on the basis of their interests and capacities.
“CreaCult” represents an entrepreneurship experience doubly important for the young people involved: on one hand it fostered the diffusion of art in the everyday life and the visibility for the young artists who exposed their works, on the other hand the project realization itself was a real challenge which permitted to the organizers to prove and develop their personal and professional skills. The initiative ended with a final event which took place on 16 June 2013, where the young artists painted in the main place of the city on a mobile installation together with all the people who wanted to prove themselves in this way, producing spontaneously a common big work on a “false wall”.

  • The Youth Initiative in Greece: Info-point on awareness & networking for entrepreneurship

A group of young people, supported by ADEP SA, organized an info-point at their premises. The main aim was to transmit initial information on the matter of youth entrepreneurship and help those interested in it, to identify programmes they can exploit as well to reach the correct local bodies, so that to continue their effort without losing time and effort.

ACTIVITIES

POPEYE foresees 7 steps, having impact both at local and European level. Most of the activities will be implemented at the local level and through local contacts. ALDA will create a model of development of the activities and set the standards for their implementation, but their concrete management will be a partners’ task.

  1. Preparatory Activity: During Activity 1, each partner will identify and involve 40 economically, culturally or socially disadvantaged young people aged 15-25, living in its geographical area. The participants will be selected by the partner organisations, possibly in collaboration with local authorities so as to better identify the target groups in the areas concerned.
During this same phase, the partners, in collaboration with local authorities and/or local associations of farmers, will identify and contact organic farmers potentially willing to cooperate with the project.
  2. Educational Activity: During this phase of the project, each local partner will organise a 5-days’ educational event for its participants, consisting in a 2 days of seminar and 3 days of training on ICT and digital mapping. At the end of this phase, each partner will select 10 participants willing to further contribute to the project. They will be the ones who will take part in the following activities.
  3. Digital mapping: During the third phase of the project, the selected participants (10 per partner) will contact the organic farmers of their geographical area and collect data about their geographical position, their features as producers and sellers as well as their characteristics as potential hosts of trainees.
  4. Development of the website: Each group of 10 participants will set up a “national” webpage bringing together all the information collected on the ground. The website, through dedicated filters, will list all the farms “mapped” under several items: country, typology of production and its special characteristics, characteristics of the proposed traineeship, availability of the traineeship in a certain period of time.
  5. Local dissemination events & promotion of the website among potential users: Each group of participants will organise a local event for disseminating the project results within the local community and especially among young people. Activity 5 will also be an occasion for promoting the concrete output of the project, the website, among other young people. Thus, not only the results of the project in terms of higher youth participation and lowered marginalisation will be disseminated, but a concrete tool for bringing young people closer to organic farming will be promoted among potential end users.
  6. Final international event: The event will be held in Strasbourg in February 2014. It will reunite 70 young participants (10 per partner) and 1 representative from each partner organisation. Each national group will be invited to showcase the results obtained during the project, with a particular focus on the involvement of its local community and local authorities in the project, on understanding its relevance and on planning its follow-up.
  7. Evaluation & dissemination: The evaluation activity will involve all the partners and the participants, which will contribute to define the results reached by the project in all its phases.
