In response to the growing threats to democratic governance across Europe, ALDA – the European Association for Local Democracy – is proud to announce the launch of the BRIDGE to the CoE: Building Resilience and Independence for Democratic Governance and Engagement with the Council of Europe project.
Starting in March 2025 and running until the end of October 2025, the project aims to counter democratic backsliding by empowering civil society organisations (CSOs) and strengthening citizen engagement. With a special focus on Eastern Europe (notably Moldova and Ukraine) and Southern Europe (particularly Italy), the project addresses the urgent need to reinforce democratic resilience, promote the Council of Europe’s values, and foster cross-border dialogue.
In regions like Ukraine and Moldova, civil society plays a critical role in upholding democratic reforms amidst political instability and external threats. Meanwhile, in countries such as Italy, the civic space faces increasing restrictions that hamper the work of NGOs, especially those defending human rights and migrant issues. BRIDGE to the CoE will tackle these challenges by raising awareness about Council of Europe standards, facilitating dialogue between civil society actors, and building the skills needed to engage in policymaking processes.
The project includes several key activities: a hybrid workshop in Vicenza, a major conference in Chisinau bringing together civil society representatives from Ukraine and Moldova, and an extensive communication campaign featuring webinars, podcasts, and events at ALDA’s General Assembly.
