The Cherkasy Province plays a central role in the governance and development of the Cherkasy region, focusing on socio-economic growth, Dnipro river management, cultural development, and regional security. Since the start of Russia’s invasion, the council has prioritised humanitarian aid, working with organisations like Caritas Spes and the Red Cross to support displaced persons and vulnerable groups, providing essentials such as food, clothing, and medical supplies. In addition to humanitarian efforts, the council promotes local democracy by engaging citizens through regular meetings with local deputies, ensuring public participation in decision-making and fighting corruption. It also invests in improving local governance by offering training on topics like decentralisation, good governance, and sustainable development.
The Cherkasy Province seeks membership in ALDA to enhance its local governance capabilities, gain access to international projects on decentralisation and human rights, and attract additional resources to address local challenges. Membership would also strengthen the council’s role in European integration processes.
